Xitlali Villa is a passionate advocate for social movements and sovereignty, dedicated to fostering community-led, sustainable organizations and businesses that enhance BIPOC ownership and wealth. Their career is marked by a steadfast commitment to creating impactful change through research, education, and hands-on community work.
Driven by a desire to address issues of post-industrialism, gentrification, land sovereignty, and environmental justice, Xitlali has secured funding for their research from prestigious organizations such as the National Science Foundation and Fulbright. Xitlali’s research spans the USA and Latin America, focusing on the dynamics of these critical topics.
In Ecuador and Colombia, Xitlali collaborated with Indigenous and rural communities to develop community-led digital media workshops, empowering local voices and promoting digital literacy. This hands-on approach reflects their dedication to grassroots development and community empowerment.
In Baltimore City, Xitlali worked with the Black Yield Institute to strengthen food and land sovereignty in Cherry Hill. They played a key role in coordinating the city’s first Black and Brown-led food cooperative, a pioneering initiative that promotes community ownership and food security.
Most recently, Xitlali completed a fellowship with Mission Driven Finance, an impact investment firm. During this fellowship, they developed innovative financing solutions for companies practicing regenerative agriculture in the USA, furthering their commitment to sustainable and equitable economic practices.
