At Potlikker Capital, we believe every investment is relational.
Over the past six years, we have listened, learned, and invested alongside producers and processors across the country. These relationships have deepened our understanding of what it takes for enterprises to grow, communities to thrive, and regional food systems to become stronger and more resilient.
Our first Impact Report captures many of the lessons we have gathered along the way. Its findings reinforce a belief that has guided Potlikker from the beginning: capital is most powerful when it is connected to the people, knowledge, relationships, and opportunities surrounding an enterprise.

Every producer and processor brings a different history, a different set of strengths, and a different vision for what comes next.
Understanding that vision begins with listening.
Listening reveals the larger ecosystem surrounding an enterprise: the land, infrastructure, markets, knowledge, partnerships, community relationships, and cultural traditions that shape its future. It also brings into view the generations of exclusion that have influenced access to land, capital, markets, and opportunity for Black, Indigenous, and other producers and processors of color.
These realities influence how capital should be structured, which relationships need to be strengthened, and what opportunities can be cultivated over time.
For Potlikker, listening is an investment practice. It allows the producer’s vision to lead while we invest with the whole picture in view. Patient, flexible financing can then work alongside knowledge, expertise, partnerships, and opportunity to advance the long-term goals of an enterprise and its community.
Resilience Is Cultivated
Resilience grows when producers have trusted relationships they can turn to during moments of uncertainty. It grows through access to timely information, specialized knowledge, new markets, and networks of peers. It grows when capital provides the flexibility to respond, adapt, and continue building.
Our Impact Report demonstrates what becomes possible when these elements work together.
Among the 34 partners who participated in the impact survey, 15 began their relationship with Potlikker through loss-mitigation efforts. Every one of those businesses remained standing. Eighty-three percent of respondents agreed that Potlikker played an important role in keeping their farm from failing.
The report also found that partners gained trusted relationships, information, new opportunities, networks, and communities of practice. These connections continue creating value as an enterprise grows, evolves, and navigates what comes next.
The findings reflect the power of coordinated investment: capital moving together with technical assistance, relationships, knowledge, and opportunity.
Investing in the Whole Ecosystem
A farm or food enterprise exists within a larger living system.
Its success may depend on access to land, processing capacity, distribution infrastructure, reliable buyers, technical knowledge, or trusted partners. Progress in one area can strengthen many others. A new relationship can open a market. A piece of infrastructure can create capacity for several producers. An investment in one enterprise can generate opportunity throughout a community.

Our relationship with FarmerJawn offers one example. Potlikker’s $500,000 investment supports FarmerJawn’s vision for an enterprise rooted in regenerative agriculture, community wellness, education, and greater access to fresh food. That vision connects the health of the soil, the strength of the enterprise, and the well-being of the communities FarmerJawn serves.
When an investment is understood within this broader context, its value can extend across people, enterprises, communities, and food systems.
Expanding the Meaning of Return
Financial performance remains essential. Thriving enterprises need strong revenue, sound operations, and sustainable pathways for growth.
Ecosystem Investing also allows us to recognize the full range of value created alongside that performance.
A return can be found in land remaining in the hands of a family and being passed to the next generation. It can be seen when a producer reaches a new buyer, a processor creates new capacity, or a community gains greater access to healthy, locally grown food.
It can take root through restored soil, new jobs, deeper community ownership, strengthened cultural traditions, and relationships that continue generating opportunity long after an initial investment is made.
These outcomes are interconnected. Together, they contribute to long-term economic, environmental, and cultural prosperity.
As Potlikker enters its next chapter, the lessons from our first six years will continue to guide us. We will keep listening to the people closest to the land and the work.
