Underwriting and Research Intern

Potlikker Capital (Potlikker) is a charitable loan fund created to holistically serve BIPOC (Black, Indigenous and people of color) farmers in America who operate at the intersection of racial and climate justice.

Job Description: As the Underwriting and Research Intern, you will gain tangible, hands-on experience and insight into all aspects of our business. Interns will learn the importance of customer relationships and what underwriters are looking for in each risk. Interns will have exposure to all aspects of Potlikker underwriting work, networking, and team-building opportunities.

Work Schedule: 5 to 10 hours per week

Start Date: Immediately

Compensation: Paid position

Location: Remote, flexible work schedule

Job Responsibilities:

  • Assist staff with market research, underwriting, and performing financial analyses for program, and mission related investments

  • Support Potlikker’s efforts in reviewing lending and technical assistance opportunities by conducting market, financial, policy and general research, collecting and cataloging information and sources

  • Communicate research findings and present analyses through written reports, investment memos, data visualizations (graphs, maps, reports), and presentations

  • Collaborate with staff in farming operations data collection and data-driven impact measurement and accountability

  • Develop and utilize spreadsheets, databases and other computer applications

  • Assist staff with project-related tasks as requested

  • Participate in staff meetings as necessary

Qualifications

  • Desired: 3 years of completed undergraduate work

  • Strong attention to detail, with organizational, finance and research capabilities including analyzing large volumes of information from disparate sources and synthesizing it in cogent and concise written form

  • Excellent communication and written skills

  • Knowledge of the basic principles and practices of accounting and financial analysis

  • Strong presentation skills

  • Proficiency with Google Suite, Microsoft Excel

  • Able to set priorities, meet deadlines, and work independently

  • Multicultural sensitivity and competence in working and communicating with people across lines of difference

  • Strong interest in social & environmental justice
